Dear Student,

Herewith we would like to encourage you and your fellow students to apply for participation in the Space Station Design Workshop to be held at ESA/ESTEC in February 2002.

The primary objective of the workshop is to give the participating students the opportunity to learn and practice systems engineering, applied to the conceptual design of a space station. Participants can directly put into practice the knowledge acquired during space-related lectures on a motivating project and also experience working together within interdisciplinary and multinational teams. The design teams will work according to an interdisciplinary conceptual design methodology, and will use sophisticated software tools custom-designed for this purpose. The workshop location, ESTEC's new Concurrent Design Facility in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, will provide a state-of-the-art design environment while the Directorate of Manned Spaceflight will give technical support. Travel and accommodation costs, and a daily subsistence allowance for all participants will be provided by ESA.

Similar workshops have been held with great success since 1996, at the "Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Aéronautique et de l'Espace" (Supaero) in Toulouse, France; at the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg, France; as well as at the Space Systems Institute (IRS) of the University of Stuttgart, Germany.

More information is available on the workshop website, http://www.estec.esa.nl/outreach/SSDW.

We would appreciate your support in spreading the information concerning this
unique opportunity.

Yours faithfully,

Corinne Flandy
